Sabbat Series: Beltane, the Festival of Fire
Characteristics of Beltane: Magic + Spiritual Power, Rebirth + Fertility, Creativity
Beltane is the halfway point between spring equinox and summer solstice and is a celebration of the fertility of spring and the nurturing of the future harvest celebrated on 1 May annually. One of the four quarterly festivals, Beltane saw members of communities come together to celebrate the return of summer. The observance of this highly critical time in the turning of the wheel of the year was characterized by a celebration of the return of fertility to the land. The word Beltane roughly translates to “bright fire” and, as such, one of the most important rituals was the lighting of the Beltane bonfire. Fire was seen as a purifier and healer and in this way the community was connected to each other by the sacred fire which was central to all. Smoke from the fire blessed the fields, animals, and community, and maintained the wary, careful balance between the human and faery realms. Beltane is about casting off the darkness and celebrating the light, a time for celebrating the Earth’s rebirth and fertility as well as our own creative energies. As with Samhain (All Hallows Eve), Beltane is also considered a time when the veil between worlds is thin and therefore, it is a magical and powerful time.
Whether your desire is to rekindle a connection to the ancient past, return to a simpler way of celebrating our Mother Earth, or forge a new path forward this blend was made for your arsenal. The Beltane blend embraces the ancient powers of the herald of spring, the cleansing fires of the Beltane Bonfire, and the promise of summer’s bounty. “Beltane” is perfect for diffusing in meditation, contemplation, or any healing work. While it can be enjoyed any time, the most powerful benefits will be during the period of May1 through June 19.
